Northwood Murder Suspect Seeks Change of Venue
NORTHWOOD, Iowa (AP) - A Northwood man charged with first-degree murder is asking that his trial be moved because of the small number of black residents in Worth County.
The Globe Gazette reports 39-year-old Tyrone Washington appeared Monday in Worth County District Court to seek a change of venue.
Washington is charged in the Aug. 5 stabbing death of 30-year-old Justina Smith, of Northwood.
Washington argued that with so few blacks in Worth County, he couldn't be judged by a jury of his peers. He added that he'd be at an additional disadvantage as a black man who was dating a white woman.
Washington also sought a new lawyer, but District Judge Colleen Weiland denied the request.
Weiland will rule on the venue change request later.
