A North Liberty man is accused of pushing a one-legged man out of his wheelchair.
According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, witnesses and the alleged victim pointed out 36-year-old Jerald T. Navarre as the suspect in the assault, which occurred at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night at 101 S. Dubuque St. Police said Navarre pushed the victim out of his wheelchair, causing the man to tumble into the street and scrap his elbow and the stump of his missing right leg.
Witnesses told police Navarre stood over the other man, grabbed his face and was "disrespectful." Navarre was "extremely hostile" toward the assault victim and witnesses and screamed at them when he was placed under arrest, police said.
Police said Navarre had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled like alcohol. His speech was slurred and he didn't make sense when describing the altercation to officers, police said.
Navarre was either unwilling or unable to answer simple questions, police said.
Police said Navarre admitted to drinking earlier in the day and said multiple times that he was "guilty" and "buzzing."
Navarre was taken to the Johnson County Jail where he faces charges of assault causing bodily injury and public intoxication.
