LANCASTER, Wisconsin - Grant County authorities have a man in custody after deputies say he shot at a car full of children.

This happened on Highway 61 near Dickeyville. That's where deputies say the woman noticed a truck parked along the side of the road with the barrel of a shot gun sticking out of the driver's window.

As she passed the truck, she and her four children felt the bullet hit her car. Investigators say that bullet narrowly missed the woman's head.

Grant County Sheriff Nate Dreckman said, "if that shot would have been 4 or 6 inches lower, we'd be totally dealing with a different story here."

Deputies say Thomas Welp is responsible for firing the shots. He faces a charge of recklessly endangering safety.
