WEST UNION, Iowa - A former North Fayette teacher and girls basketball coach was arrested Thursday and accused of having a sexual relationship with a student, officials said.

After a month long investigation, James M. Hanson, 39, of West Union, was arrested on suspicion of sexual exploitation by a school employee by Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation's unit.

According to a criminal complaint, a juvenile female student and Hanson engaged in a sexual relationship with sexual acts occurring inside Hanson’s classroom, the training room and the coach’s office – most often after basketball practice. Officials said Hanson continued this relationship with the student after she graduated, and sent her explicit sexual text messages describing sexual acts he wanted to perform on her. Hanson was interviewed and denied any physical contact, but admitted to a close personal relationship with the student and admitted sending text messages that were “sexual in nature” to her while she was still a student at the high school, authorities said.

According to the North Fayette Community School District Web site, Hanson is listed as a government teacher whose courses include 10th Grade World History, 9th Grade World Geography and 12th Grade Contemporary Problems.

Court documents state the female was a student from fall 2009 until spring 2012, and had Hanson as a teacher in 2009 and 2012, as well as a basketball coach from 2010-2012.

North Fayette Community School District Superintendent Duane Willhite said Hanson was put on administrative leave March 20. His resignation was accepted this past Monday, he said.

Hanson was transported to the Fayette County Jail, where he posted a $10,000 bond and was released on a promise to appear in court.

The incident is an ongoing investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office at 563-422-6067.
