CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) — A former northern Iowa police officer accused of choking a child has pleaded not guilty to child endangerment.

The plea was entered Tuesday for 43-year-old James Gray Jr., of Nora Springs, who is being held in Floyd County Jail. City records say he has left the Nora Springs force.

Court records say Gray threw a child onto a bed and choked him late last month, leaving a red mark on the boy's neck and under his left eye.

Gray wasn't on duty at the time.
