DES MOINES, Iowa — A gas station clerk was unable to read a note brought in by a man wearing a ski mask early Thursday.

The robbery attempt happened at the Phillips 66 station at 3718 Southwest 9th St. just after midnight.

Taylor Belding told Des Moines police that the man handed him a note, but he told the robber he couldn't read it, and asked the masked man what it said.

Belding said the man told him to "give him the money."

Belding said he couldn't do that.

Belding said he opened the cash register drawer, but as the man reached over the counter he shut the drawer.

Police said Belding told them the man then tried to pick up the entire cash register, but Belding grabbed it from the other side and pulled back.

Belding said the man ran out of the store empty handed.

Police said they are reviewing security video from the store. Anyone with information on the case should call Des Moines police.
