CORALVILLE, Iowa -- An abandoned suitcase led the Johnson County Bomb Squad to the Coral Ridge Mall Thursday night.

Coralville Police Lt. Shane Kron said an officer was dispatched to JCPenney around 7:45 for an unattended suitcase. When no one returned to pick up the suitcase and mall staff was unable to determine what it was doing there, the officer requested the bomb squad be called in.

"We felt it was suspicious enough to notify the bomb team and have it looked at," Kron said.

Police waited until the mall closed at 9 p.m. to take a look at the suitcase. Until then, mall patrons were kept away.

Kron said the bomb team examined the suitcase and found it was empty.
