NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa - Police said they discovered a large marijuana grow operation at a North Liberty residence in September.

Acting on a tip, members of the Johnson County Drug Task Force conducted a knock-and-talk at 140 W. Zeller St. - the home of 53-year-old Debbie J. Kennel-Waechter and 56-year-old Kevin J. Waechter - on September 16. Police said Debbie Kennel-Waechter gave officers consent to search the residence

Before the search got underway, Kennel-Waechter gave officers a pipe used to smoke marijuana, several containers of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia, according to police. Officers searched the residence and found a grow operation in the basement consisting of roughly 120 plants, chemicals and other growing devices.

Police said Waechter took full responsibility for the grow operation, but both him and his wife were taken into custody. The couple now faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor.
