FEMA Wants Cedar Rapids Library Moved

By Becky Ogann

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency says Cedar Rapids must build its new downtown library on a site other than that of flood-wrecked library along the Cedar River.

City Council member and mayoral candidate Brian Fagan revealed FEMA's decision during a mayoral debate late Tuesday at Coe College. He says as a result, the city could receive an extra $4 million in disaster payments for the library.

Fagan called the FEMA decision on the library a victory for the city's use of consultants to make the case to build a new library at a new site.

Two block-sized sites have been identified as preferred locations for the new library.
