Time Running Out to Apply for Flood, Tornado Assistance

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Time is running short for low- and moderate-income Iowans to apply for grants to help their recover from last year's weather disasters.

Those in need have until Oct. 16 to apply for assistance under Iowa's unmet needs program. Eligible households are those with incomes at or below 300 percent of federal poverty guidelines.

According to the Rebuild Iowa Office, about 3,000 households have been assisted by the $7.85 million allocation to the Iowa unmet needs disaster grant program. About $1.5 million remains in the program.

The grants are to be used for personal property, home repair, food assistance, mental health assistance, child care, transportation, temporary housing and other immediate unmet needs. Those applying for the funds have to residents who lived in counties declared presidential disaster areas between May 24 and Aug. 14, 2008.
