Man Sentenced for Thefts During Flood

By Daren Sukhram

DAVENPORT (AP) - A federal judge in Davenport has sentenced a 22-year-old former Iowa City man to more than 16 years in prison for stealing from homes evacuated during last year's floods in eastern Iowa.

Judge John Jarvey sentenced Michael Ray Garr on Wednesday to 200 months in federal prison, three years of supervision and $700 in fines after he pleaded guilty to possession of stolen firearms and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Two other men were previously sentenced in connection with the crimes.

Authorities say the three men burglarized at least four homes in Coralville during evacuations prompted by floods in July 2008. Officials say the men stole at least 25 firearms and other personal property while homeowners were evacuated.
