ELDRIDGE, Iowa (AP) — About 280 people will lose their jobs when a Chicago-based printing company closes its plant in Eldridge.

Letters sent by R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. to workers this week say the plant will close July 31 "because of changing market conditions." There will be severance packages.

Television station WQAD is reporting that the plant prints textbooks, educational materials and government documents.

The company is shedding other plants around the country, including those in Greeley, Colo.; Menasha, Wis.; and South Bend, Ind.

The company reported more than $10 billion in sales for 2010, with net earnings of more than $217 million.
