MidAmerican Energy Studying Area Near Wilton for Nuclear Power Plant
WILTON, Iowa - A site three miles east of Wilton is one of two in Iowa that MidAmerican Energy is examining carefully as part of its nuclear power plant feasibility study.
MidAmerican was scheduled to meet Tuesday with landowners in the area of rural Muscatine County to explain the assessment process, according to Tina Pothoff, a spokeswoman for the Des Moines-based utility. Pothoff said no decision has been made whether to build a nuclear plant, or where it will be located. She said MidAmerican is finishing up a three-year feasibility study authorized by the Iowa General Assembly in legislation that enables the company to recover up to $15 million from customers for the process. While the Muscatine County site is on the eastern side of Iowa not far from steel mini-mills and other large industrial users, the other site is on the western side of the state near Hamburg. Pothoff said a meeting with landowners in that area was held last week. |
