MARION - A new Marion store aspires to become a mecca for outdoor chefs.

The Grill Works, which opened May 6 at 763 8th Ave., will hold its grand opening from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 15.

Owner Brian Gilliatt of Marion operated a business repairing grills and providing replacement parts from his home for about a decade before deciding to open a store. The deciding moment came when Gilliatt had the opportunity to buy the grill part distribution business in Chicago that he had been using to obtain parts after the owners decided to retire, explained his wife, Lisa Gilliatt.

The new store will allow Gilliatt to offer new grills, accessories, and specialty barbecue sauces and rubs. The store also carries Green Mountain grills, a new concept of grilling that uses wood pellets to both cook and smoke meat simultaneously.

“We’re working to make it a store that people will constantly want to come back to and see what’s new,” Lisa Gilliatt said.

Brian Gilliatt is an employee of MidAmerican Energy who became involved in grill servicing when MidAmerican was selling Charmglow gas grills to its customers, and servicing, Lisa said. After the company decided to get out of the service part of the business, Brian stepped into the void by opening his home-based parts and service business.

The business will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The grand opening celebration will include samples, grilling demonstrations, prizes and specials.
