DES MOINES (AP) - The head of Iowa's lottery says sales are ahead of last year's numbers but profits are down slightly.

Chief Executive Officer Terry Rich says sales from the beginning of the fiscal year July 1 through October were 4 percent higher than the previous year. Profits dropped about 3 percent due to slower sales in October and bigger payouts.

The lottery produced about $18.6 million in profits during that period for the state treasury.

Rich expects strong upcoming results thanks to holiday promotions and the addition of the multi-state Mega Millions jackpot game early next year.
