Waterloo Community College Cuts Faculty Jobs

By Becky Ogann

WATERLOO (AP) - Officials with Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo say 43 full- and part-time faculty members will be laid off, while other staff will see a pay freeze and furloughs.

College President Greg Schmitz says in a memo to employees that the school is moving forward on restructuring because of state budget cuts.

Spokeswoman Kathy Flynn says the school's 33 regular part-time and 10 full-time faculty members are being laid off. Also, staff not covered by a collective bargaining agreement will see a pay freeze and furloughs.

The state's community colleges could face $22 million in state cuts next year.
