New Outdoor Field at UI to Open this Year
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A new outdoor field for the University of Iowa's marching band and other programs is scheduled to open this year.
The $16 million project includes an indoor turf field and support areas. It will be part of the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
Historic flooding in 2008 destroyed the university's Voxman Music Building, which complicated storage and transportation for the Hawkeye Marching Band's instruments.
The band practices at a temporary field and recital hall, though band director Kevin Kastens says conditions are not ideal.
The outdoor practice field has been graded and seeded, and construction of the indoor turf facility has begun. It's expected to be completed this fall.
