Winter Storm Warning Issued, Snow to Start Falling Thursday Afternoon

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A winter storm is still on track to move into the area tomorrow. Winter storm warnings have gone into effect for much of Iowa, with 5-7” of snow likely across Eastern Iowa by the time the snow wraps up on Friday. Some locally higher amounts are possible, especially in the southwestern part of the KCRG-TV9 viewing area.

Thursday morning will be dry, and the morning commute will have no weather issues. During the afternoon, snow will move in from the south, with the highest chance of snow happening after 3 p.m. There is a high chance of a band of heavy snow developing across the area from about 6 p.m. through midnight. During this time, thundersnow is possible, and snowfall rates of an inch per hour could occur. Travel will be very hazardous during this time.

After midnight, the snowfall should begin to lighten somewhat. Snow showers are still going to be likely into Friday, but the brunt of the snow will occur Thursday evening into the early overnight hours.

East winds of 15-25 mph, with gusts to 30 mph, will cause blowing and drifting snow through the overnight hours Thursday night. The wind will diminish somewhat on Friday, but some blowing snow will continue in open areas.

Much of the accumulation from this winter storm should fall during the burst of heavy snow that we are expecting Thursday evening. If you must travel during that time, be prepared for rapidly worsening road conditions; road crews will be unable to keep up with the pace of the snow.
