By Rachel Begle

ANKENY, Iowa - The first Republican is expected to announce his bid to replace Tom Harkin in the Senate in 2014.

Matt Whitaker is an Ankeny attorney and University of Iowa graduate. He played football for the Hawkeyes and earned Academic All-American honors in 1992. Whitaker served as a U-S Attorney and now practices privately.

The Republican will announce his candidacy at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Ankeny's Accumold Corporation.

The only other candidate to announce they are running for the open seat is Democrat and First District Representative Bruce Braley. Harkin is retiring in 2014 after serving Iowa for nearly 40 years in Congress.
