CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - United Way of East Central Iowa kicked off their annual fundraising campaigning Thursday.

This years goal is to raise $9.9 million, in honor of United Way's 99th year. That money goes to help nearly 40 local agencies who serve those in need in the community.

While United Way gives money to agencies ranging from Girl Scouts to the Community Health Free Clinic, they focus on addressing needs in three core areas: health, education, and financial stability.

Last year United Way of East Central Iowa raised over $10 million. Every dollar raised stays in the chapter's five-county service area.

United Way representatives say they're seeing a growing need in the community, getting more requests for funding than they can possibly fill.

This year, United Way is able to stretch donations ever further through a challenge grant. The grant will match donations dollar for dollar.

The campaign runs through the end of the year. You can make donations through the United Way website or by contacting their office at 319-398-5372.
