UI Frat Removed From Campus After Alleged "Hazing"

IOWA CITY, Iowa A University of Iowa fraternity has been suspended over allegations of hazing.

Details of what led to the suspension of the UI chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon were not available, but in a news release, the fraternity's national board of directors said it "will not tolerate hazing or behavior that violates risk-management policies or the general guidelines for chapter operations."

A UI statement suggests alcohol played a role in the suspension: "The university does not tolerate hazing or unsafe and illegal consumption of alcohol in any of its student organizations."

The UI said it fully supports "the swift action taken this weekend by Sigma Alpha Epsilon's national organization, and a further university investigation into individual violations of the Code of Student Life is in progress."

UI police said any criminal charges involving the fraternity would fall under the Iowa City Police Department's jurisdiction. Iowa City police are not conducting an investigation, Sgt. Denise Brotherton said.

The fraternity's house, at 302 Ridgeland Ave, will be closed and members living there will have to find other housing arrangements, according to the SAE release. The UI said it will help displaced students find other off-campus housing options.

All of the UI chapter members have been expelled from the organization and have had their membership privileges revoked, according to the SAE release.

The national organization said it hopes to return to the UI at some point in the future. The UI chapter of the fraternity was chartered in 1905.

Just last week several members of the Iowa State University SAE chapter had their memberships suspended for unspecified reasons.
