Two Cedar Rapids Restaurants Prepare To Close
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Two Cedar Rapids restaurants have decided to close their doors.
Spring House Manager Jill Schmitz says changes in the economy led to the decision to close the restaurant at 3980 Center Point Rd. NE. Schmitz says they also needed to make their bathroom larger to meet ADA codes and regulations, but they can’t afford the disability improvements.
The Spring House will close no later than Nov. 3 to give customers with gift certificates as much time as possible to use them. Schmitz says they also put the closing date in November to give employees more time to find another job. She says they may close earlier if the restaurant ends up short-staffed as employees find new jobs.
The Spring House opened in November of 1969.
Gatherings is also making plans to close its doors. Owner Tom Hauer says they couldn’t reach an agreement with the Bottleworks Building's homeowner’s association on renewing their lease. Gatherings sits in the first floor of the Bottleworks Building at 905 Third St. SE. Other floors in the building are filled with loft condominiums.
Hauer says he expects Gatherings will close before their lease expires in late March. He says they’ll stay open as long as they have bookings and events to host.
“We had a lot of fun with it," Hauer said. "It wasn’t our decision to close it."
While the event center is preparing to close, Tom says he and his wife Toni will keep their kitchen open on First Avenue to support their catering business.
