Team's Bus Slices Through Semi's Trailer During Crash
COLFAX, Iowa —The Iowa State Patrol said a multi-vehicle crash shut down part of Interstate 80 near Colfax Friday morning.
Troopers said the eastbound lanes of I-80 are closed east of Colfax at 8 a.m. The DOT said the crash is between Exit 155: IA 117 and Exit 159: county roads F48 and S52 (near Colfax).
Troopers said the crash involved a charter bus and several semi tractor-trailers.
Witnesses said a semi truck lost control in the slick conditions, smashed through the center cable barrier and ended up in the other lanes. The bus crashed into the truck's trailer -- slicing it in half.
A Simpson College spokesman Ken Fuson said the charter bus was carrying members of the Simpson College Softball team.
Some 36 team members and coaches were on the bus during the crash. No one was seriously hurt.
Student athlete Britney Steele reported on Twitter that "Simpson Softball has an angel watching over us today. #Thankful" Another Tweet reports, "Mr Bus Driver, you are my hero."
The team was taken to a nearby Perkins restaurant, a new bus was brought in and the team started back on their journey eastbound on I-80.
As of 11 a.m., the section of the interstate where the crash happened was still closed.
