Tama Man Killed in Road Construction Hit & Run
TAMA, Iowa - Funeral services are set for a Tama County man killed in a hit and run wreck Thursday at a road construction site in south central Iowa.
The Iowa State Patrol says 27-year-old Christopher James Wheeler of Tama died when a semi truck hit him at the construction site in Warren County.
Troopers say the truck driver, 46-year-old Rubin Ward of Chicago, kept driving. They stopped and arrested him later. He's in the Warren County Jail awaiting charges.
Troopers say it happened on Highway 65 near Liberty Center, just south of Indianola.
The patrol says Ward told them he didn't see the construction zone flagger, but scene evidence proves otherwise. Investigators found more than 300 feet of skid marks.
"Pay attention to the signs there were signs up there was construction ahead a half mile people need to be aware of their environment as they approach a construction zone and when they see the traffic start slowing down, slow down," said patrol Sgt. Scott Bright.
The Iowa DOT says 58 people have died in the past decade in construction zone accidents.
Visitation for Christopher Wheeler is scheduled for Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kruse Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Funeral services are the next morning at 10:30. The burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo.
