Small Explosion Leads to Fire at Norplex Plant in Postville

By Max Walker

POSTVILLE, Iowa - Authorities said a small explosion led to a fire at the Norplex processing plant early Monday morning. Online records list the address of the plant in the 600 block of Lybrand Street.

Postville Fire Chief Jeff Bohn says three people were injured. One was taken to a local hospital before being flown to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in critical condition. A second was treated and released, and a third refused treatment at the scene.

Bohn says fire crews got the call at 1:19 Monday morning, and said the explosion in the southeast corner of the complex did most of the damage. He credits the sprinkler system at Norplex for controlling the fire.

Firefighters also had to turn off the gas valves which the plant uses to make laminates.

The state fire marshal is expected to arrive sometime on Monday to investigate what caused the explosion.
