Six People Without a Home After Late Night Fire in Cedar Rapids
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A late night fire left six people with out a home in NE Cedar Rapids.
It happened at about 11 Friday night at 1132 White Ivy Place NE. Firefighters say they could see flames coming from the roof of the home. When they entered the home, parts of the ceiling collapsed and gave them access to the attic where they could contain the fire.
The home is owned by Discovery Living, an assisted living home. A 20-year-old staff member was home with five adult males ranging in age from 20 to 37 at the time of the fire. He allegedly hearding a popping noise, smelled smoke and saw flames on the roof. He helped get the other five men out of the home.
All six escaped without injury and found shelter for the night. The fire appears to have started at the front porch light and extended to the roof but the exact cause is unknown.
