Roads Slick with Freezing Precipitation

LINN COUNTY, Iowa - Icy roads are making travel in some rural areas nearly impossible through Eastern Iowa. Sunday night Department of Transportation plows had most of the areas highways and Interstate 380 cleared, DOT supervisor Dennis Perrin said, but secondary roads have become the real problem.

"(The roads) are slick, there's a quarter inch of ice on them," said Ed Allaire, who lives off Otter Road in Toddville, which was completely covered in ice Sunday night. "A lady slid off the road into our driveway."

The Linn County secondary roads department had crews out across the county laying down sand and salt as of 5 p.m. Sunday night.

"(The roads) are terrible," said Charlene Allaire. "There's a curve and everything just slides down, you need to slow down or stay home."

Otter road will likely remain covered with ice for some time, Pat Jones, a resident of the area said.

"It gets pretty slick, if you take your time you can get through it," he said.

Conditions are expected to improve by Monday morning. A tow ban remains in effect for all of Linn County.
