DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gannett Co. has promoted Rick Green to president and publisher of The Des Moines Register.

Former publisher Laura Hollingsworth made the announcement Tuesday in the Register's newsroom, saying "He is the right guy at the right time. He has earned this role."

Green has worked as the Register's vice president and editor since 2011. He's been co-acting publisher since May.

He replaces Hollingsworth, who in May was named president and publisher of the Nashville Tennessean. She also is president of the central group of U.S. Community Publishing and oversees 25 operations, including Des Moines Register Media.

Green also was named regional president of U.S. Community Publishing's Central Group and will report to Hollingsworth.

Before joining the Register, Green was executive editor at The Desert Sun in Palm Springs, Calif.
