WEST DES MOINES — The state Board of Regents today selected William Ruud to serve as the 10th president of the University of Northern Iowa.

Ruud, 60, will start in the job June 1, at a salary of $340,000, the board voted unanimously, with no discussion after nearly three hours of closed session. Ruud will sign a three-year contract with the regents.

Ruud is president of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.

The regents interviewed the two finalists in both open and closed sessions Thursday before making the selection. A third finalist withdrew his name from consideration earlier this week.

The new president will succeed Ben Allen, who is retiring after leading UNI since 2006. Allen earns $339,456 this year.
