CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A record crowd cheered Czech heritage at the 10th annual Brewnost at the National Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids Friday night.

More than a thousand people paid $70 each to try various craft beers from around the world, surpassing last year's record turnout. This year, the Lion Bridge Brewery, which is scheduled to open in Czech Village next spring, offered a special beer for the event.

Brewnost is a fundraiser for the museum, raising $91,000 last year. Organizers say toasting with beer is also part of Czech tradition.

"Beer is basically part of the genome of being Slovak or Czech," said Jason Wright of the Czech Museum. "It's in just about every famous quote, every famous book. It is part of our blood."
