Police: Teen Killed by Lying on Train Tracks
KELLOGG, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a central Iowa teenager who was fatally struck by a train was lying on the tracks before the accident.
Witnesses told the Jasper County Sheriff's Office that 18-year-old Kyle Smith, of Kellogg, was lying across the tracks before the Wednesday morning accident involving a train owned by Iowa Interstate Railroad.
The train was traveling eastbound through Kellogg when employees saw a person lying on the tracks. They activated the train's horn and applied the brakes, but Smith did not move.
The employees told authorities they were unable to stop the train in time.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
