DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police in Des Moines say a body found in the backyard of a boarded-up house is that of a man police had been seeking for a hammer attack on his girlfriend.

The Des Moines Register reports that the body of 48-year-old Larry Jay Western, of Des Moines, was found Thursday evening. Western was a suspect in the beating of a woman about 18 hours earlier.

Police found the woman with blood on her face and right hand at a Des Moines apartment around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. She told officers that Western had choked her and used the hammer to hit her several times.

Police are investigating Western's death as a homicide.

An autopsy was performed Friday, but the cause and manner of Western's death have not been released.
