Biker Killed in Crash with School Bus in Central Iowa
DES MOINES, Iowa - A motorcycle rider was killed in a Thursday morning crash with a school bus.
The incident happened at about 7 a.m. at the intersection of East 29th Street and East Douglas Avenue.
Des Moines police spokesman Sgt. Jason Halifax said the bus was traveling westbound on East Douglas Avenue, while the motorcycle was headed southbound on East 29th Street when the crash occurred.
Halifax said East Douglas has a stop sign at the intersection, while East 29th Street does not. The bus crossed in front of the motorcycle and the two collided.
Des Moines School officials said about 20 students headed to North High School were on the bus at the time of the crash. There were no injuries to any students or the bus driver.
Counselors will be at the school Thursday to help the students who witnessed the crash.
Halifax said the motorcycle rider, 34-year-old Nicholas Edward Neal, was not wearing a helmet. He also said this is the third motorcycle fatality in Des Moines in the last 30 days.
The crash remains under investigation.
