Police Arrest Three for Slamming Stolen Car into Convenience Store

By Adam Carros

WATERLOO, Iowa -- Police say a cell phone left inside a jeep that slammed through the front of a Waterloo convenience store led them to the suspects.

Waterloo police arrested three people for the Monday morning burglary, 19 year-old Alexis Caldwell, 34 year-old Joshua Pankey and 34 year-old Cory Schanke.

Surveillance video captured crooks crashing a Jeep through the front of a Kwik Stop on Texas Street in Waterloo before dawn Monday. They were apparently trying to steal money from a video poker game.

Police say the truck had been stolen from a home in Gilbertville and one of the suspects left a cell phone inside. That led police to Tuesday's arrests.

Each of the suspects faces two counts of third-degree burglary for the Kwik Stop break-in and another break-in at a Sinclair Metro mart on Falls Avenue earlier this month.
