Northern Iowans Treat UIHC AirCare Team to Free Meal
IOWA CITY, Iowa —Iowa air ambulance crews from across the state were in Mason City Thursday night for a memorial service for three crew members killed in a crash a week ago.
The memorial was for Shelly Lair-Langenbau, Russ Piehl and Gene Grell.
Hundreds attended the service, including the AirCare team from the University of Iowa Hospitals.
The team posted a picture on their Facebook page about what happened after the service.
"Today, the AirCare team attended the memorial service for the Mercy Air Med team in Mason City. Afterwards, all 13 of us had dinner at a restaurant and when we went to pay the bill ... an anonymous person had already paid our entire bill and left. They left this note ... how amazingly thoughtful"
The note written on a napkin reads, "For all you do and in memory of your team mates … this meal is on us."
The post had received more than 4,300 likes and more than 590 shares by of Friday afternoon.
AirCare operates two of Iowa's 11 air ambulances. The program has now flown more than 28,000 patients over 2.6 million miles.
