DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - National Rifle Association President David Keene is scheduled to appear at a Polk County Republican Party luncheon.

Keene will be a guest at the luncheon at the Iowa State Capitol on Thursday.

Keene has been active with the NRA for decades, starting as a board member before being elected the group's president in 2011. He is a former chairman of the American Conservative Union and a co-founder of the American Freedom Agenda.

Keene became a public voice for the gun rights group in national debates following the December mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Twenty children and six educators were killed in the Dec. 14 shooting.
