WALFORD, Iowa - A fire in Walford left a home damaged beyond repair and a family displaced this morning.

Just before 7:30 a.m., the Benton and Linn County Fire Departments responded to a call at a home at the 300 block of 3rd Street. They worked for hours to put out the fire but weren’t able to save the building.

Authorities believe the fire started in a fireplace or wood burning stove and spread to the roof. The flames traveled to the attic and through the kitchen and living room. Firefighters had to pull the ceiling of the home down to contain the fire and put it out.

Fire Chief Mike Sankot says the incident does not appear to be suspicious and no one was injured. They are investigating the cause.
