Marion Rotary Marathon is Boston Strong, Helping Local Kids

By Jay Knoll

MARION, Iowa - The Boston Marathon bombings Monday are still on the minds of the runners and walkers here in Eastern Iowa.

Today, the Marion Rotary Marathon took runners from Linn Mar High School, up along County Home Road, then back to the stadium for the finish. Before the race...a moment for Boston.

"At the beginning of the race they did a Boston ceremony so we kind of remember those guys and the tragedy. It was fun, great experience," said Andrew Sabin, who won the half marathon.

The Marion Marathon for Shoes was an inaugural event. Money raised goes to "Shoes for Kids."

"We give the school nurses a gift card a $20 gift card to Payless shoes, " said Marion Rotary President Michelle Bell. "We don't ask for income guidelines. If a nurse sees a child at school that needs the shoes, they get the shoes."

The program has provided new shoes to more than 3,500 kids in low income families.

"It takes a village to pull this thing off, and the village came out to help us. It's been very successful," said Nick Glew, Marion Rotary Marathon organizer.
