Linn County Power Outage Fixed Quickly, But Central City Students Still Sent Home Early
CEDAR RAPIDS -- A power outage that affected an estimated 1,700 Alliant Energy customers in Linn County was resolved quickly Friday -- but not quickly enough for the Central City School District, which had already sent students home early due to the outage.
The power outage was reported just before 11:30 a.m. Friday, and was expected to take four to six hours to repair. However, crews had nearly everyone back on line by 12:30 p.m.
Central City school officials said they had to "make the call" about dismissing early when the outage first occurred, and were told that repairs likely wouldn't be completed before the end of the school day.
Despite the early dismissal, the district will be able to count Friday as a full class day, district officials said.
The outage affected customers in Central City, Springville, Viola and Stone City, and began with a broken insulator on a line near Marion, Alliant Energy officials said.
