Lincoln Café Will Close in December

By Katie Stinson

MT. VERNON, Iowa —The popular Lincoln Café in Mt. Vernon will close its doors December 21st.

Executive chef and owner Matt Steigerwald says he’s about to turn 50 and it is time for new challenges. In an email to fans of the Lincoln Winebar sent out earlier tonight he says, “The last 12-plus years at the cafe have indeed been a glorious time for me and the restaurant, and I want to thank each and every one of you, along with my fantastic staff, for your amazing support. It's been an honor to be part of the rocketing and diverse growth in downtown Mount Vernon during this time.”

He also clarified that while the Café is closing the nearby Lincoln Winebar will remain open serving wine, wood fired pizzas and live music. Steigerwald says he sent the email out shortly before six tonight and within minutes received well wishes from fans of the eatery.

“Right now, he says,” we’re trying to figure out how to keep the fries for life people happy.” The Lincoln Café offered free french fries for life to any customer who had the restaurant’s slogan “food is important” tattooed on their body.

Steigerwald says he rents the Lincoln Café’s current location and hopes someone decides to take over the site and put in a new business.
