Wintery Weather Causes Several Crashes, Snarls Traffic
By Brady Smith, Reporter
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - An early blast of snow that lasted into Monday morning caused accidents throughout the corridor.
Chris Rolwes of Safe Driver Driver's Education said that it doesn't matter what your driving skill is; once there's snow or ice on the ground, it takes traction away from tires and reduces the driver's ability to maneuver and stop.
A lot of fender benders and more severe wrecks ended up at McGrath Collision Center, which usually sees an uptick in business during the first snow accumulation of the season. John Weber, who oversees the collision center, said he's seen damage ranging from dings and dents in the $500-$1,000 range, all way to total losses.
The Iowa DOT reminds drivers of the following winter driving tips:
• Make sure your vehicle is in good operating condition for winter time driving.
• Take time to find out about the weather and road conditions.
• Use good driving skills to avoid losing control of your vehicle.
• Operate safely around snow removal equipment.
