CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Iowa lottery officials say sales are soaring.
Sales climbed to $311 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2012. That's up nearly $40 million from the previous year. Already this fiscal year sales are up 14 percent over last year.
That's from games like Powerball and Mega Millions, which have had huge jackpots this year. Scratch offs have also had a big year. The Iowa lottery actually sells more of those than they do the big jackpot games. Whether you play the lotto or not, when their sales are up everyone in the state benefits.
"All the money made by the Iowa Lottery goes back to the general fund, 60 percent of that to education, public safety, and also the veterans trust fund," said Terry Rick, Iowa Lottery CEO.
On average the Iowa Lottery generates 80 million dollars in revenue for the state.
