Iowa City Man Accused Of Crashing Car, Fighting With Police While Naked

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- An Iowa City man is accused of getting into a drunken car crash, evading capture and fighting with police -- while naked.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office criminal complaints, 23-year-old Matthew D. Roberts' extended night with law enforcement began around 3 a.m. Tuesday when he hit a guardrail at the 4 mile marker on northbound Interstate 380. Police said Roberts fled on foot from the scene and was later found trying to hitchhike.
Roberts appeared to be intoxicated and had a blood-alcohol content of .173 percent, more than twice the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle, police said. An open bottle of whiskey was found spilled inside the car, as well as an open beer.
While en route to the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety for more testing, police said Roberts began head-butting the squad car cage, causing a large cut to his head. The arresting deputy took Roberts to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where more trouble ensued.
Police said while in the emergency room lobby, Roberts took off his pants and "caused a scene." Later, when he was discharged from the hospital, Roberts refused to get dressed and started two fights with the deputy while he was still naked.
"Mr. Roberts was uncooperative the entire time," the complaint states.
Roberts was taken to the Johnson County Jail, and faces charges of second-offense drunken driving and interference with official acts.
