IOWA CITY, Iowa -- An Iowa City man is accused of breaking into a home and hitting a 5-year-old child when he was chased out.

The victims, who are not named in the Iowa City police criminal complaint, reported to police that 34-year-old Juan Carlos Canizalez-Perez broke into their Blackfoot Trail residence at 6:12 a.m. Sunday. Police said the residents told Canizalez-Perez to leave their home and tried to remove him from the residence.

Police said as the residents were trying to get Canizalez-Perez out of the home, he lunged past them and backhanded a 5-year-old child in the residence. Canizalez-Perez then turned around and hit the child on the side.

Officers arrested Canizalez-Perez, who lives nearby. He now faces one count of third-degree burglary.
