CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A day designed for bargain hunters is in full swing.

Black Friday kicked off earlier than usual this year with stores opening on Thanksgiving Day. Toys “R” Us, Wal-Mart and Sears all opened at 8:00 p.m. Thursday night. Target opened at 9:00 p.m.

Other retailers, like J.C. Penney, held their deals for the traditional day of shopping, Black Friday. Managers opened the doors at the Cedar Rapids J.C. Penney to a crowd at about 6:00 a.m. Hundreds of people rushed in to get a slew of hot items. Shoppers said they were looking for the sales items: boots, sweaters and small appliances. Within a half an hour the store was picked over and people were waiting at the checkout line.

Many shoppers said J.C. Penney was their final stop for the Black Friday shopping day. With retailers opening throughout the night on Thursday and during the early morning hours of Friday, many said they could spread out their shopping spree to include more places.

Overall, the National Retail Federation said as many as 147 million shoppers across the U.S. would head out for the after-Thanksgiving bargains.
