DUBUQUE, Iowa - The key city is playing host to the Dock Dog World Championship. Hundreds of dogs and their owners are at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque competing for the title.

Gary Hansen and his regional champion dog, have something to prove at the world championships. But the Minneapolis man is glad he didn't have to drive any further to make their point.

Hansen said, "It was only five hours so it was very convenient. "

The pair is no stranger to Dubuque. Like many other competitors, they've been here before. "We love Dubuque and we really enjoyed it here," he said.

Turns out the feeling is mutual.

Dubuque Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Keith Rahe said, "The Dubuque area has embraced Dock Dogs through the years. They had tremendous crowds for these competitions. That really plays into their decision of where they're going to go. "

The Dock Dogs regional competition first came to Dubuque in 2005 as part of America's River Festival. They've been back every year and in addition held the national competition in Dubuque in 2010.

Rahe said, "In 2007 we were named the outstanding venue of the year. That's something all the competitors vote on so that was a real big honor. "

Dubuque will once again host the world championships next year and in 2014.
