DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police say a man abandoned his dog in a secluded part of Des Moines but told his wife that he'd had the ailing animal euthanized.

The Des Moines Register says 54-year-old Michael Foley has been charged with animal abuse and abandonment.

The dog was found near Echo Valley Country Club on Saturday. It had an infection on its back and was later euthanized.

A microchip in the dog led police to Foley and his wife. She told officers the dog had awakened in pain and says her husband told her he took the dog to a vet and soon returned, saying the dog was euthanized.

A phone listing for Foley is no longer in service. Online records don't list the name of his attorney in the case.
