Des Moines Bus Offers Free Ride to Cool Shelter

By Rachel Begle

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines public transit buses are providing free rides to air conditioned shelters available overnight for residents needing a break from the heat.

An overnight cooling shelter has been established at Zion Lutheran Church in Des Moines. It will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday nights. Doors are locked at 10 p.m.

DART is offering free rides good on all local routes from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

Passengers need only tell the bus operator that they are going to the overnight cooling shelter for the free ride. Those who stay overnight at the shelter can get a free return trip in the morning by catching the bus at the nearest stop to the shelter.
