Coralville Police Officer Injured In Icy Crash Recovering
By Mark Carlson, Iowa City Bureau Chief
CORALVILLE, Iowa - A Coralville police officer spent the night in the hospital after an icy crash on Interstate 80 Sunday afternoon. Dashboard camera footage shows officer Michael Wright helping other drivers at the base of the westbound exit ramp from the interstate to 1st Avenue when a semi slams into his patrol vehicle.
"It was a scary situation," said police chief Barry Bedford. "It is an example of why everyone needs to slow down in those conditions."
Wright, who has been with the department for 14 years, was cut above his eye and received some other bumps and bruises. Bedford said he may have lost consciousness for a brief period of time.
"There's a period of time that's unaccounted for," he said. "But we are happy he is going to be okay."
The dashboard footage shows the impact of the crash, which sent Wright's squad car into a jeep several feet away.
Bedford said the squad car, which was brand new, is totaled. The Iowa State Patrol is still investigating the crash.
