Investigation into Officer-Involved Shooting Underway in Cedar Rapids
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - One person was injured in an officer-involved shooting Saturday morning in Cedar Rapids.
Shortly after 7 a.m., police were called to the Advance Auto Parts store at 3910 Center Point Road NE, when witnesses saw a man kicking a vehicle in a nearby parking lot.
An employee from the store heard the disturbance and approached the man who was damaging the vehicle. The man then turned his attention to the employee, who then quickly returned to the store and locked the door. The suspect gained entry into Advance Auto Parts.
At about 7:07 a.m. a Cedar Rapids Police officer arrived at the scene and entered the store. At approximately 7:08 a.m., the officer reported shots had been fired and requested backup.
Marcy Heald, manager at Soapy Waters Laundromat across the street, says a customer came inside frantic after hearing gunshots. "She said, 'oh my god, there's gunshots,' and so I grabbed the phone, shut the door, ran outside, and she pointed me in the direction of Advance Auto, and she's like, 'there were gunshots in Advanced Auto."
The suspect was transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds. His name and condition are not being released at this time.
The Advance Auto Parts employee received minor injuries and the officer was uninjured.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department is assisting the Division of Criminal Investigation with the investigation. Police are not releasing any additional information at this time.
